This in continuing to play catch-up on PSS…
Kim set this theme, which is:
“Your own, personal all-time Oscars”
This is actually a pretty tough one for me. This is not because I don’t enjoy films, but because I enjoy such a wide variety of varying films, actors and actresses that it makes picking just one so difficult. This would be much easier if I could break it down into Best Comedy, Best Actor in a Comedy, Best Drama, Best Horror, ect.. But I’ll do my very best.
Best Actor Nominations:
Bill Murray:I Love him in nearly every role he plays. Always a joy to watch with VERY FEW misses throughout his career.

Kevin Spacey: A true chameleon! Never know who he’s going to be in a film, but love him in nearly every role he plays.
John Candy: A master of the comedic arts. Taken from us far too soon. I think I’ve got more “belly-laughs” from John Candy than from any other comedic actor.
George Clooney: Hated his early career, but have come to love all his more-recent roles. Displays his range as a joy to watch and completely believable in films from “O’Brother Where Art Thou” to “Michael Clayton”.
Jack Nicholson: Bleeds universal cool, creepiness and believability into every role he plays.
And the Winner for Shane’s Best Actor…..Kevin Spacey.
Best Actress Nominations:

Ingred Bergman: Casablanca - Need I say more?

Kathy Bates: She seems very down-to-earth and enjoyable in all her roles. Even in “Misery” she made you feel some warmth for her character. She also played a part side-by-side w/ my MOM in “A Home of our Own”. (No serious, my mom was an extra a part of that movie right next to her)

Natalie Portman: I really enjoy watching her in her various roles. She was amazing at a very young age in “Leon” which also happens to be a pick for best film. (Although I think she was replaced by her evil terrible-acting twin in the Star Wars prequels. That wasn’t her. I’m sure of it!)

Nicole Kidman: I really enjoyed her in her earlier roles. Unfortunately I think her marriage to Tom screwed her up as an actress. I’d like to see her get back to what she used to be. This nomination is a nod to her older roles “Dead Calm” and “To Die For”. (See those films if you haven’t!)
And the winner is… Kathy Bates. Sure she was supported by my mom’s backing as an extra for 5.3 seconds of her career, but it was instrumental in her squeaking out The Shaney.
Best Film Nominations:

The Departed: Nearly the perfect film. Incredible cast, compelling story, nicely paced. All to be spoiled in the last 3 seconds of the film when a rat walks across parting shot of the film. Really? Did we need that? Stupid. So, w/ the exception of the last 3 seconds of the film, it was outstanding.

Leon: “The Professional”: Might be a surprise to some. Good all around films with one of the most tense moments in film history. (Young Natalie Portman pleading help through the peephole of professional assassin, her life completely in his hands. wow.) It all comes down to teaching your kids the trade you know.

12 Angry Men: An amazing cautionary tale of group dynamics, mob mentality and taking a stand against adversity for a lost cause. This should be mandatory viewing for every kid entering into their teen years, it will be for mine.

Garden State: Finally a romantic comedy that doesn’t make me want to puke, make me feel terrible for being a man or end w/ the girl almost marrying the “wrong guy”. Bleh. Maybe I love it more for what it isn’t. Interesting…

Shindler’s List: Much along the lines of 12 Angry Men, it is a great cautionary tale of what can happen when good men fail to act and also how much can be accomplished when one good man does take action. It’s rated R and has extensive nudity, but again I feel it is a film which should be shown to every teen / young adult. As a matter of fact it’s my main example of why a universal ban on rated R movies (amongst those of my faith) is short-sited and a detriment to the people. It’s not about the nudity it’s about the humanity being treated as less than cattle and how unless people act, it can, has, continues and will happen again.
And the winner is… Shindler’s List. Powerful film which tears out your heart… and should.
