Stupid Me in Stupid Glee!

So a while back I asked myself.  “Self - Tell us something you have done recently which was really dumb.”

“Ah Yes..” I replied.  ”Well there was the time I dressed up a broom in a bow and sunglasses and forced my kids to pose for family pictures with it.” : Dusty Dusty Love

“Ah yes” Self replied to me.  “That was pretty dumb.  It was also kinda creepy… you freak.  You need help.”  I, He and we all paused a moment, then added “What about the time you thought everyone in Ohio was in the wrong timezone?” Making (up) Time in Ohio! “I mean seriously, WTF was wrong with you?!”

“Need we say more?!”

At least he said it with a straight face…

President Bush, responding to crisis in Georgia (the Country, not the State) said:

“Bullying and intimidation are not acceptable ways to conduct foreign policy in the 21st century.”

Wow! Now THAT took some balls. Not because he’s standing up to Russia, but because his foreign policy has been nothing but bullying and intimidation.

Is it possible he’s finally learned the error of his ways? No No… Why start now?

The real tragedy here is that the U.S. can do next-to nothing to slow down the crisis in Georgia. With our troops already spread too thin in two wars in the middle-east we lack the military might to posture effectively. With our many abuses over the last 8 years concerning torture, politicizing of Intelligence data, unprovoked wars, bullying other countries, and numerous breaches of our OWN constitution we simply lack the credible moral authority to shun Russia’s moves.

Oh Well… At least he didn’t start snickering mid-sentence  That’s a plus for him.

Drop Dead Video

A while back Monica set the PSS theme of “Think back to when MTV actually played music videos. Tell us about 3 of your favorite videos.”  So, here’s mine.  I apologize for the really somewhat dark themes.

#3: Colplay: God Put a Smile on your Face

#2:Pink Floyd: Goodbye Blue Sky

#1:Moby: Natural Blues

Node Trip!

Amy set this PSS theme…

“In honor of the upcoming summer season and considering the high price of gas, most of us won’t be taking road trips for a while. So pretend that gas is $2.00 a gallon and describe your ideal U.S. road trip (or one you had in the past that was a favorite).”

I have to stop and chuckle a little bit at myself because I’m so far behind.  Notice the “in honor of the upcoming summer season…” part of this question?  Yeah.. Probably best answered a month and a half ago, but I think we are all already agreed that I suck.

Anyhow, I hate road-trips.  I’m probably just some weird terrible person who doesn’t really enjoy being on the road.  I mean, I do travel fairly frequently for work - and Amber drags me out on the occasional road trip.  Remember Project Say Something: My Worst Vacation Ever ?

Anyhow, traveling just isn’t my deal.  I’d much rather stay home.

No… Seriously…

So this will be one of my few serious posts. I promise we’ll return to our regular programming in the days ahead. Anyhow, here goes.

I am boycotting the Bejing Olympic games. I’m not going to watch them, read about them or otherwise support them. It’s too bad too since the Olympics are one of the few Sporting Events i actually enjoy. If you choose to our not, is up to you and I really won’t fault you for it.

Throughout the years the Olympics have been more than just a sporting event. It’s been a place for the world to come together in peace. In fact, the charter of the Olympics is “The goal of Olympism is to place sport at the service of the harmonious development of man, with a view to promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity.” If that’s the Charter, then why… China?

China, while an economic and military powerhouse, still does not have freedom of the press, freedom of religion or grant it’s citizens the right to assemble. This post would get me arrested (or worse!) in China.

So at the end of the day. I can’t bring myself to watch the Olympics and I encourage you to do the same.

The Shaneys

This in continuing to play catch-up on PSS…

Kim set this theme, which is:

“Your own, personal all-time Oscars”

This is actually a pretty tough one for me. This is not because I don’t enjoy films, but because I enjoy such a wide variety of varying films, actors and actresses that it makes picking just one so difficult. This would be much easier if I could break it down into Best Comedy, Best Actor in a Comedy, Best Drama, Best Horror, ect.. But I’ll do my very best.

Best Actor Nominations:

Bill Murray:I Love him in nearly every role he plays. Always a joy to watch with VERY FEW misses throughout his career.
Kevin Spacey: A true chameleon! Never know who he’s going to be in a film, but love him in nearly every role he plays.

John Candy: A master of the comedic arts. Taken from us far too soon. I think I’ve got more “belly-laughs” from John Candy than from any other comedic actor.

George Clooney: Hated his early career, but have come to love all his more-recent roles. Displays his range as a joy to watch and completely believable in films from “O’Brother Where Art Thou” to “Michael Clayton”.

Jack Nicholson: Bleeds universal cool, creepiness and believability into every role he plays.

And the Winner for Shane’s Best Actor…..Kevin Spacey.

Best Actress Nominations:

Ingred Bergman: Casablanca - Need I say more?

Kathy Bates: She seems very down-to-earth and enjoyable in all her roles. Even in “Misery” she made you feel some warmth for her character. She also played a part side-by-side w/ my MOM in “A Home of our Own”. (No serious, my mom was an extra a part of that movie right next to her)

Natalie Portman: I really enjoy watching her in her various roles. She was amazing at a very young age in “Leon” which also happens to be a pick for best film. (Although I think she was replaced by her evil terrible-acting twin in the Star Wars prequels. That wasn’t her. I’m sure of it!)

Nicole Kidman: I really enjoyed her in her earlier roles. Unfortunately I think her marriage to Tom screwed her up as an actress. I’d like to see her get back to what she used to be. This nomination is a nod to her older roles “Dead Calm” and “To Die For”. (See those films if you haven’t!)

And the winner is… Kathy Bates. Sure she was supported by my mom’s backing as an extra for 5.3 seconds of her career, but it was instrumental in her squeaking out The Shaney.

Best Film Nominations:

The Departed: Nearly the perfect film. Incredible cast, compelling story, nicely paced. All to be spoiled in the last 3 seconds of the film when a rat walks across parting shot of the film. Really? Did we need that? Stupid. So, w/ the exception of the last 3 seconds of the film, it was outstanding.

Leon: “The Professional”: Might be a surprise to some. Good all around films with one of the most tense moments in film history. (Young Natalie Portman pleading help through the peephole of professional assassin, her life completely in his hands. wow.) It all comes down to teaching your kids the trade you know. :)

12 Angry Men: An amazing cautionary tale of group dynamics, mob mentality and taking a stand against adversity for a lost cause. This should be mandatory viewing for every kid entering into their teen years, it will be for mine.

Garden State: Finally a romantic comedy that doesn’t make me want to puke, make me feel terrible for being a man or end w/ the girl almost marrying the “wrong guy”. Bleh. Maybe I love it more for what it isn’t. Interesting…

Shindler’s List: Much along the lines of 12 Angry Men, it is a great cautionary tale of what can happen when good men fail to act and also how much can be accomplished when one good man does take action. It’s rated R and has extensive nudity, but again I feel it is a film which should be shown to every teen / young adult. As a matter of fact it’s my main example of why a universal ban on rated R movies (amongst those of my faith) is short-sited and a detriment to the people. It’s not about the nudity it’s about the humanity being treated as less than cattle and how unless people act, it can, has, continues and will happen again.

And the winner is… Shindler’s List. Powerful film which tears out your heart… and should.

Dusty Dusty Love

A damn long time ago few weeks back “Other Kim” set the PSS following PSS topic. Please note: I dont’ have the exact topic anymore, so I’m writing this from memory and might contain an unfortunate typo or two…

“What is your favorite broom in your house and why.. please include photo if you can.”

I was a little taken-a-back by this topic. I thought I was the only one who felt so fondly of brooms, and one broom in particular. I mean, I guess asking about your favorite room might make more sense, but hey… Here we go.

I do have a favorite broom and here she is…

“Broomber” beautiful, sleek, useful.. Oh the adventures we’ve had!

I can just get lost in her kid-sized-sized-red-rimmed-sun-glasses. And she’ll never complain about my over-use-of-hyphens.

Oh go ahead my love… A few calories would do your figure some good.

The kids are still having issues accepting their new mother. Just give them time.
